  New Traditions for Book Groups

Create a new tradition! Here are some fun and creative ideas for your reading group.

  • Come dressed as characters in the book or just act out some characters in the book
  • Serve a beverage and/or food that a character likes in the book
  • Discuss your books outside whenever the weather is nice -- in a park, in your garden, at the zoo, on a beach and don’t forget the picnic basket
  • Have members choose a favorite section from the book and have them read it out loud
  • Invite an author, go to a book reading, invite a professor specializing in the author’s work or some parallel aspect of the book
  • Select a theme to incorporate several books and months of discussion – racial issues, another country and culture, coming-of-age, regional authors and/or subject (i.e. "Southern Writers" or "Takes Place in the South")
  • Organize a fund for a literacy-related charity.
