March 2024 Spotlight: City of Brea Book Club
Our March 2024 Spotlight is celebrating eight years together!
I started the book club here at the City of Brea when I began working here in 2016 with a handful of fellow readers as a way to make friends and of course read. We have grown from a group of 3-4 to a fun, loud, boisterous group of 16. We typically meet in the employee break room during lunch once a month. We have tried a few different ways of choosing our next book and have found that genres work best for us. If so inclined, members will send me a suggestion and I create an online poll which is anonymous for people to vote on and then reveal the next read at our next meeting. We use a randomizer to choose the next genre each month. Each December, we have a book exchange luncheon at the Nordstrom Café across from City Hall which is featured in the attached picture. We are very low key about whether you read the book or not, no guilt here. There is a strong core group of 7 that always read it. Some people just come because the lunch discussion is so fun. Some of our favorite books over the years include:
The Book of Polly
Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows
Miss Benson’s Beetle
The Henna Artist
Hello Beautiful
The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store
Crying in H Mart
Project Hail Mary
All of our Spotlight Groups receive a box of books for discussion! Graywolf Press will be sending the members of the City of Brea Book Club copies of I’m a Fan by Sheena Patel, Dreaming of Ramadi in Detroit by Aisha Sabatini Sloan, Raised By Wolves: A Graywolf Anthology, and Shy by Max Porter.
