August 2024 Spotlight: The Traveling Book Club

Our August 2024 Spotlight hold discussions in locations from their books!

We read so many books set in fascinating places. A group of friends decided it would be great fun to travel to those locations for our book discussions. Our Traveling Book Club was born! We read one book a year. The discussions are held at actual places mentioned in the story. Taking turns selecting the book and planning the trip is part of the fun. The goal is to immerse ourselves into the story by visiting as many sites as possible.

For the first 2 years, we selected our destination before selecting the book. We learned that it is better to base our trip on a good book than to find a book set in a specific location. On one trip, we were joined by the author who took us to parks and neighborhoods that inspired her novel. For a mystery book set in Virginia wine country, we were able to procure the services of a sommelier who prepared a lunch and wine pairing that was “to die for.” Our most recent trip was Charleston, SC where we delved into the Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd.

Our selections include:

Murder Stalks a Mansion by Anne-Marie Sutton set in Newport, RI

Only Ever You by Rebecca Drake set in Pittsburgh, PA

The Merlot Murders by Ellen Crosby set in Virginia wine country

Love Anthony by Lisa Genova set in Nantucket, MA

Under the Trestle by Ron Peterson, Jr. set in Radford, VA

Next we are reading a book and it’s sequel:

The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson set in Troublesome, KY

The Book Woman’s Daughter by Kim Michele Richardson set in Troublesome, KY

All of our Spotlight Groups receive a box of books for discussion! Melville House Publishing will be sending the members of The Traveling Book Club copies of The Last Songbird by Daniel Weizmann, The Village Idiot by Steve Stern, The Bloodless Boy by Robert J. Lloyd, Jamie MacGillivray by John Sayles, and Goering’s Gold by Richard O’Rawe.
