September Spotlight:
The Summer Reading Group
The September Spotlight Group is The Summer Reading Group!
The Summer Reading Group meets the third Thursday of each month at the Elsie Quirk Public Library in Englewood, Florida.
The Summer Reading Group has met for four summers. They read one novel a month (June-September) for the discussion. The Sarasota Library System encourages adults to participate in Summer Reading by asking participants to fill out an activity log and submit book reviews for a chance to win various prizes throughout the summer. Past prizes included a Kindle Fire donated by the Friends of Elsie Quirk Library, a coffee -themed gift basket, donated by the Sarasota County Library Foundation, and a mystery-themed gift basket donated by the Sarasota County Library Foundation.
This group has read and discussed two novels so far this summer: Where’d You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple and The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin. They have yet to read and discuss the final two novels, A Spool of Blue Thread by Anne Tyler and The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown. The final choice The Boys in the Boat was chosen this year as Sarasota’s “One Book One Community” selection that is read and discussed in all Sarasota Public Libraries. Sarasota has scheduled rowing competitions this year, so The Boys in the Boat was a perfect choice for them.
The Summer Reading Group is unique because they only meet in the summer when things are fairly quiet at the library. During the “season” most of the summer readers belong to either The Great Books Discussion Group that meets November-April, The Short Story Group that meets from November-April, or The Reading Discussion Group that meets from October-April.
