January 2024 Spotlight: Book Club Girls Sparta
Our January 2024 Spotlight is celebrating five years together!
Book Club Girls Sparta from Sparta, NJ, celebrated a milestone anniversary in November 2023: five years together as a book club! We held our annual celebration out at a local restaurant and continued our tradition of a raffle and gift exchange. All year long we meet and discuss one or two books. During the first three months of the year, we meet on Zoom and often have an author join us. The rest of the year, one person leads the monthly discussion of their choice of book, and occasionally we take a field trip. Some of our favorite nights out are when we eat at a local restaurant and then discuss the book over dessert.
Our book group consists of 19 members, including two mother-daughter teams. Our love of books is what brought us together, and not only have we enjoyed discovering new authors and genres, but we have also built a large circle of friendship with one another. Over the course of our five years together, we’ve read a whopping 65 books! In 2023, we read 15 books and we especially loved The 6:20 Man by David Baldacci, Those Empty Eyes by Charlie Donlea, The Cemetary Keeper’s Wife by Maryann McFadden, and The Last Word by Taylor Adams. Our favorite genres are thrillers and suspense, and we often share titles we read outside of the assigned books of the month.
We couldn’t be prouder of what we have built together: a diverse and loving group of women who come together each month to share their love of books, food, wine, and friendship. We encourage all who are interested in forming a group to just do it! The connection, memories, and friendships that result are so impactful and provide a sense of belonging and purpose with a very human connection. Wishing all clubs happy reading in 2024!
All of our Spotlight Groups receive a box of books for discussion! Bloomsbury will be sending the members of Book Club Girls Sparta copies of Medusa by Jessie Burton, Sugar, Baby by Celine Saintclare, and The House of Doors by Tan Twan Eng.
