The April Spotlight Group Is…

April 2021 Spotlight: American Association of University Women (AAUW)

Our April 2021 Spotlight advances gender equality for women and girls!

I belong to the book group that is part of the Oakdale-Riverbank-Escalon branch of American Association of University Women (AAUW) in California. I first joined this group in 1993, but it had been in existence for years before that. AAUW is a group dedicated to advancing gender equity for women and girls through research, education, and advocacy. Our local branch has been very involved in programs involving junior high and high school girls.

Our book group reads and discusses a variety of genre, from classics to current events, fiction and nonfiction. We have traditionally met in a member’s home and have met September through November, and then January through May, picking a larger book for September to read through the summer. And then COVID hit. We crawled into new technology and learned to Zoom our meetings. Then we decided we weren’t getting enough of each other and extended our meetings straight through the summer.

Our April 2021 Spotlight Group is the AAUW

All of our Spotlight Groups receive a box of discussable books. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt will be sending the members of the AAUW club free copies of these great titles:

Black Buck by Mateo Askaripour
The Arsonists’ City by Hala Alyan
The Postscript Murders by Elly Griffiths
Come Fly the World by Julia Cooke
