April 2021 Spotlight: American Association of University Women (AAUW)

Our April 2021 Spotlight advances gender equality for women and girls!

I belong to the book group that is part of the Oakdale-Riverbank-Escalon branch of American Association of University Women (AAUW) in California. I first joined this group in 1993, but it had been in existence for years before that. AAUW is a group dedicated to advancing gender equity for women and girls through research, education, and advocacy. Our local branch has been very involved in programs involving junior high and high school girls.

February 2021 Spotlight: Virtual Beach Book Club

Our February 2021 Spotlight is a “wine group with a book problem” from Florida!

We formed a book club in Pensacola Beach, Florida, that moved to virtual meetings during the time of confinement. We had canceled our meeting last March due to the virus, but since then we meet each month, because my group of lovely ladies was missing each other. I suggested a virtual book club meeting to discuss our book (Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty) as well as share a glass (or two or three) of wine.

January 2021 Spotlight: The Telltale Book Club

The members of our January 2021 Spotlight come mostly from the nursing profession and receive themed bookmarks every month!

The Telltale Book Club started meeting in July 2019 with a phenomenal group of women from the Oklahoma City area. We’re an interesting group as many of us are Labor and Delivery/Postpartum nurses. We average 15 participants in every discussion and we meet on Tuesdays every four weeks.

Our very first book discussion was The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides. After that initial meeting, our monthly book has been chosen by vote.

December 2020 Spotlight: Book Club Girls Sparta

Our December 2020 Spotlight celebrates two years together and discusses two books every meeting!

We are a group of 24 women that range in age from mid-thirties to 70s who have been together for two years now (in November). We are out of Sparta, New Jersey, and call ourselves the Book Club Girls Sparta. We meet once a month and usually discuss two books.  It is a wonderful group of women who have come together to share their love of books, wine, food, and friendship.

This photo was taken in January when we met for our first meeting for 2020.

November 2020 Spotlight: Literally Speaking

Our November Spotlight comes from North Dakota and has been meeting for over 20 years!

We have been an organized group since 1999. We still have five of those original members although currently we have 13 members, which is about the max amount we like to have for good discussions and ease of hosting the group. Our name is “Literally Speaking” AKA the “Book Bags”! Our group is organized this way: we take turns hosting approximately every 6-10 weeks. The hostess selects the book and also decides when and where the meeting will be.
